Why I built this
A straight question from my son, and no straight answer.
Hi, I'm Doug. When one of my kids was 16 he asked whether he should already know where he's going to college and what he'll do for work after he graduates. That's a heavy question for a teenager, and I realized I couldn't hand him a straight answer. I didn't know how to help him understand the careers he was suited for, whether those careers have a good outlook, or which schools would be good ones to attend.
As someone who's been building software products for over 15 years, I knew it was time to get to work. So this was a passion project built out of necessity, and now I'm finding that it's going to benefit a lot more families than just mine.
I want to be clear: this isn't a knock on high schools. Most do a pretty good job getting colleges in the door and booking visits. But they generally can't give a student the real landscape of careers they might actually be interested in, and they don't have the data to tell a family what a school is really like once you get past the tour, whether students stay, whether it costs what it says, whether it's shrinking.
At the beginning of COVID, I was (strongly) steering my boys towards software engineering. It was a safe bet and it paid well.
I'm honestly glad they didn't listen, because entry-level software-engineering jobs are now a fraction of what they were, and the ground is still moving. Even a well-meaning parent pointing at yesterday's sure thing can get it wrong. That's exactly why this tool shows AI-disruption risk with real data instead of gut feel.
